Girls Lacrosse Program Description

The Girls lacrosse program is formatted slightly different from the boys program. The program begins at the kindergarten to first grade age level in a program called Superscoopers. Our girls are then broken up into 3 Age Levels for competitions, Grades 2,3,4 is one division, Grades 5,6 are a second division, and grades 7,8 are the third division. Additionally, our girls teams are a combination of the Livingston and West Orange programs, allowing for full rosters at all age levels with no player left behind.

Girls Grades 2,3,4: This is the beginning of “true lacrosse” as our girls are now going to be exposed to full team play and game strategy. The primary goal continues to be one of learning and individual skill development and throughout the spring season grows into simple Team concepts, a more in depth introduction to the rules of the game, and their first live competition against neighboring towns. This group will have 2 practice sessions weekly, 1-1.5 hours each. In addition, this group will have anywhere from 10-12 competitive games. This group will also participate in their first lacrosse tournament at the end of the spring season. All participants will experience all field positions as well as goalie (not forced). At this introductory level playing time is designed to be fairly equal, with each player guaranteed a minimum of 50% playing time in each game.

Girls Grades 5-6: Our Grade 5-6 program builds on the basic skills and strategies introduced on the 2,3,4 level, and increases the focus on Team play, positioning and game strategy, including ball movement, clearing and more fundamental defense. Practices will be two times per week, with an increase in speed and intensity of sessions. This level will also have a full schedule of games (10-12) with the addition of tournament play as available. Tournaments are local, and are typically full day affairs, which are an absolute blast for the players and their families, a true introduction to the broader lacrosse community. Most games are contested within a 20 min drive of Livingston, while tournaments could potentially be a bit farther based on availability. Playing time in games is constructed to allow equal time for all players, with each child playing a minimum of half of the game.

Girls Grades 7-8: Our oldest level of girls, this is where the intensity starts to ramp up. At this level our coaches will begin teaching full game concepts, such as defensive slides, Free position shooting and plays, and more technical defensive alignments and strategies. At this level we will start introducing a much more structured practice plan, and practices will provide a higher amount of reps at a faster pace. Practices are standard at two per week, lasting 1.5 hours each. Our philosophy remains equal playing time for all, and continues to promote every player trying out multiple positions. Game schedules typically consist of 10-12 regular season games, with 2 additional tournaments based on availability. This level is a play to win environment, and while everyone will get the opportunity to play, equal playing time is not guaranteed.
